Koinonia (Community) Garden

Koinonia in Summer!

About Koinonia…

Koinonia Garden is a community garden on the front lawn of Redeemer Lutheran Church.  “Koinonia” is a greek word meaning “deep communion by intimate participation.”  Through this garden we are discovering our deep spiritual communion with one another and the biosphere.  This Leaven Project action emerged from intentional conversation between church members, neighbors & community partners during community potlucks throughout 2009, as we discovered our shared pressures of isolation and the lack of sustainable, healthy, and affordable food systems.  Thus, Koinonia Garden was born through organized relational power, along with some joyful sweat, blistered hands and dirty knees!

Bed Teams care for the raised and permaculture beds.  We work and glean weekly as teams and harvest as a community monthly, followed by a community meal that we cook together inside the church with the fruits of our garden.  All are welcome and encouraged to bring additional sides, particularly with produce from their gardens.  No one is turned away.  We use this time to deepen our awareness of conection, share our garden learnings and stirrings, and even invite local folks to teach workshops around sustainable, spiritually engaged living.

Newest addition to the Koinonia Garden, our labyrinth!
